Hi,

Welcome to my Diary!

Fundraising during the Summer

Fundraising during the Summer

Dear Diary,

I love the Summer. I appreciate the Sun, the warm and not humid weather, going on vacations, outdoor events and more. But during the Summer, Fundraising slightly changes. This is when programs and events either stop for the Summer or slow down due to limited participation and conflicting schedules. Depending on your organization’s commitment to its community, this may be when Summer programs begin and there is a lot of activity; for example, kids summer programs begin once the school year ends. Therefore, what could productivity look like while fundraising in the Summer?

Well, here are three tips:

1. Analyze your donors/prospects and program participants’ seasonal trends. For example, it is important to know whether program participants are out of school and need a Summer camp, or already attend other programs during the Summer. Are your donors typically at their Summer homes around July? Therefore, making it hard for them to attend or even receive your event invitations? Do your research, and cultivate the relationships – so the prospect/donor also knows about your calendar of events.

2. Communicate seasonal changes to internal and external constituents. During the Summer, the pace for fundraising tends to slightly slow down (or ramp up depending on your organization’s services). It is a new fiscal year, and many people are planning and going on vacation, including those on your Board. Therefore, make sure to communicate seasonal changes prior to the new season, and ensure that the pace does not negatively affect your bottom line, or put remaining staff under unnecessary stress.

3. Relax. This is a simple but difficult tip for many in the nonprofit sector. During the Summer, as things slow down (or pick up), we tend to plan out more projects, more events, conduct more research, and so forth – simply because we have time. Whereas, taking time for yourself can also help you have a productive Summer. It gives you time to breathe, unwind, and avoid your emails for several days (if possible) so your energy is renewed, and your creativity is sparked.

My most important tip is to enjoy the Sun.

Until next time, August 15th!
